About the court

The original Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court building was built in 1894, and opened in May of that year. A modern extension was added in 1982, providing additional court rooms, chambers and a room with library, for the use the local faculty of solicitors.

Opening times

The Sheriff Clerk's office is open as follows:

  • Monday to Thursday from 09:00 to 17:00
  • Friday from 09:00 to 16:30

A limited lunch cover service is available from 13:00 to 14:00.

Justice of the Peace (JP) Signings

Justice of the Peace (JP) Signings by appointment only. Please book an appointment in advance by phoning the Sheriff Clerk’s Office.

New, first instance custodies

New, first instance custody cases will be heard in all eight Tayside, Central and Fife Sheriff and Justice of the Peace (JP) Courts:

  • Alloa Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Dundee Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Dunfermline Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Falkirk Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Forfar Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court

Small estate interviews

Small estate interviews are not taking place within the court buildings at this time, please contact your local Sheriff Court for more information and guidance.

Directions to the main location

The main Sheriff Courthouse sits prominently on the Town Square, in Kirkcaldy. We encourage the use of public transport as part of our commitment to sustainable development. Please use the journey planner for public transportation information.

Kirkcaldy bus station is situated close to the Town Square. All buses start, end and connect through this terminus. For up to date timetables or to plan your journey visit stagecoach.

The main train station is situated about 10 minutes walk from the Town Square. Visit ScotRail or National Rail Enquiries for train times.

There is no public parking at either courthouse. Free parking is available at the train station (10 minutes from the court). There is also parking on the esplanade (some free, 10 minutes from the court).

The main taxi rank is on Hill Street, at the back of the bus station. This is located through the Town Square, about 5 minutes away.

Directions to the Annexe

The Sheriff Court Annexe building is located on St. Brycedale Avenue, Kirkcaldy. The public entrance is opposite Fife College.

On arrival

Please report to reception. If unmanned, please attend at one of our public counters. All Sheriff Court custodies call within the Annexe building from approximately 12 noon onwards.

Jurors and witnesses in jury cases

If you are attending for jury duty, or are a witness in a jury case, please report to the reception point within the Sheriff Court Annexe. For further information and guidance on your jury service please visit: Jurors
