About the court

The Dunfermline Sheriff Court Building opened in its present location in 1983 having previously been located on the High Street. It covers a large area of Fife from Kincardine in the west to Aberdour in the east and has joint jurisdiction of the Forth Bridges.

Phone interpreter

A phone interpreter service is available when you contact a court by phone or attend in person. To access this service ask for phone interpreter and the language required.

The phone interpreter service is not available during actual court proceedings.

Justice of the Peace (JP) Signings

Justice of the Peace (JP) Signings by appointment only. Please book an appointment in advance by phoning the Sheriff Clerk’s Office.

New, first instance custodies

New, first instance custody cases will be heard in all eight Tayside, Central and Fife Sheriff and Justice of the Peace (JP) Courts:

  • Alloa Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Dundee Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Dunfermline Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Falkirk Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Forfar Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Kirkcaldy Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Perth Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Stirling Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court

Small estate interviews

Small estate interviews are not taking place within the court buildings at this time, please contact your local Sheriff Court for more information and guidance.

Directions to court

The Court is situated on Carnegie Drive opposite Debenhams, close to the town centre and is easily accessible by public transport. For public transportation information use the Traveline Scotland journey planner.

Cycle parking racks can be found outside the Kingsgate Shopping Centre on CycleStreets cycle parking map.

Most of the buses entering the town pass the court building which is also within a 5 minute walk of the main bus station.

The nearest train station is Dunfermline Town and is approximately a 10 minute walk from the court. For train times visit ScotRail or National Rail Enquiries.

There is no parking for the public at the court building but there is a large free car park on Leys Park Road, opposite the police station, which is a few minutes’ walk away. Alternative parking is available in the town centre including a multi-storey car park opposite the court building, there a parking costs at these sites.

There are various taxi ranks within walking distance of the court.

Edinburgh Airport is the nearest airport to Dunfermline being approximately 15 miles away.

On arrival

On arrival, you should report to the main reception desk in the foyer of the building. From there you will be directed to where you need to go.

Civil cases

Enquiries regarding civil cases such as raising a small claims action or settling a Deceased's Estate can be made in room two, the second office on the right. There are signs in the foyer for your assistance.

Jurors

Jurors attending court should report to the main reception desk for further directions. Jurors serving on a jury are provided with a buffet lunch and refreshments.

Facilities

Water is available in the foyer. There are a number of local cafes and restaurants near to the court building.

If you are sitting on a jury, lunch and refreshments will be provided for you if the court sits into the afternoon.

Accessibility

Accessible hearing

A loop induction system is available in all courtrooms. If you require to use this facility please inform the staff at the reception desk on arrival.

Accessible access

The Court building is on one level and accessible to wheelchair users. Visitors may need assistance to open the external door and some of the internal doors as they are not automatic. There is a disabled parking space available within the staff car park. Please telephone the Sheriff Clerk's office in advance to book this space.
