About the court

Dundee Sheriff Court building is an imposing listed building designed in 1833 by Edinburgh architect George Angus and completed in 1863 by William Scott. It was extensively renovated in 1996 and officially opened by the Princess Royal in 1997. The Justice of the Peace Court building is attached to the Sheriff Court building.

The Sheriff Clerk's office is open as follows:

Justice of the Peace (JP) Signings

Justice of the Peace (JP) Signings by appointment only. Please book an appointment in advance by phoning the Sheriff Clerk’s Office.

New, first instance custodies

New, first instance custody cases will be heard in all eight Tayside, Central and Fife Sheriff and Justice of the Peace (JP) Courts:

  • Alloa Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Dundee Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Dunfermline Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Falkirk Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Forfar Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Kirkcaldy Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Perth Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court
  • Stirling Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court

Small estate interviews

Small estate interviews are not taking place within the court buildings at this time, please contact your local Sheriff Court for more information and guidance.

Directions to court

The court is situated at the top of courthouse square in the city centre area of Dundee. Use the journey planner for public transportation information.

City buses which stop close to the court in Lochee Road/Court House Square are numbers 8, 17, 26, and 28/29. Bus service (Strathtay) No 15 from the stops in Lochee Road (off Marketgait). All other out of town buses go directly to Seagate bus station.

The train station is about half a mile from the court and about a ten minute walk. Visit ScotRail or National Rail Enquiries for train times.

There is no public car park at the court. The nearest multi-storey car park is in Bell Street, a short walk from the court. There is also on-street (metered) car parking in West Bell Street and some in Lindsay Street and Tay Street (south of Ward Road).

The main taxi ranks are at Nethergate, Commercial Street, Meadowside (at the top of Reform Street), Allan Street (off Seagate Bus Station), Hilltown and at the train station.

On arrival

On arrival, please report at reception or public counter. You will be directed from there to where you need to go in the building. To enter the building you will be asked to pass through airport type screening and your bags or briefcases may be searched.

Jurors on jury duty

If you are attending for jury duty please report at reception. If you are sitting on a jury, lunch and refreshments will be provided for you if the court sits into the afternoon.

Facilities

The tea bar serving hot and cold drinks, snacks and sandwiches is open from 09:00 to 12:00. There are a number of restaurants, hotels, department stores near to the court building where meals can be purchased at lunchtime.

A loop induction service is available in all courtrooms for people who have hearing difficulties. Please contact 01382 229961 if you require to use this facility.
