About the court

The Court building dates back to the late 19th Century and had a major refurbishment in 1995/96 to provide increased accommodation facilities. The Court services the jurisdictional requirements of the Lochaber District and is based in Fort William. The Justice of the Peace Court was established in the same building in 2008.

New, first instance custodies

New, first instance custody cases will continue to be heard in hub courts as first instance cases in each Sheriffdom as follows. Thereafter, if a further substantive hearing is assigned this will be to the court of local jurisdiction.

Directions

The Court is located at the West end of the High Street immediately in front of the Garrison Hotel and is easily accessed from both roads entering from North and South. Use the journey planner for public transportation information.

The bus station is a 10 minute walk to the Court.

The train station is a 10 minute walk to the Court. See scotrail and national rail enquiries for train times.

With the exception of car parking space for wheelchair users, there is no public car parking within car park at the Court. The nearest public car park is at the West end roundabout situated diagonally across from the Court.

Nearest taxi rank is at Tesco metro supermarket at East end of High Street approximately 5 minutes walk from Court.

Nearest airport is Dalcross at Inverness which is approximately 75 miles North of Fort William.

On arrival

On arrival please report to the main reception point at the sheriff clerk's public office on the ground floor where you will be advised by a member of staff where you require to go within the building.

Facilities

Water coolers are only available to witness’s in the witness rooms which, the general public do not have access to. However, if someone requires some water we are happy to provide this to them

Wheelchair users can access the building at the rear entrance where there is a ramp facility.
