About Judgments

Information on opinions, judgments and decisions made by judges in court cases.

Scottish Courts and Tribunals Judgments

Many court decisions are made orally at the time of the hearing. Others may be reserved and issued, usually in writing, at a later date.

In relation to certain cases, written decisions from the Supreme Courts are normally published, while those from the sheriff courts may be published. These are in relation to cases which involve:

• a matter of principle
• a particular point of general public importance
• an issue of legal significance

There will be circumstances when a particular decision is not published in the interests of justice.

Website improvements

We continue to make improvements on how judgments are displayed informed by your feedback.

Judgments remain high on our priority list as we continue to migrate records pre-2017 from the old website to the current one.

Our latest release in October 2024 includes the following improvements for judgments already migrated to the new site:

  • You can search by ‘Keyword’ which will search the narrative in the judgment (in addition to being able to search by case title).
  • If you use a ‘Filter’ option, the results will auto populate.
  • You can use the ‘Query String’ function which will enable you to bookmark your search and filter preferences.

Please let us know about your experience. Your feedback will help with future developments.
