Justice of the Peace Advisory Committees (JPACs) recommend to Scottish Ministers appropriate candidates for appointment as Justices of the Peace within each Sheriffdom. Members are appointed for a term of five years, with a possibility of re-appointment for one further five-year term. The following sheriffdoms require to appoint members:
Lothian and Borders; (Deadline 14 November)
North Strathclyde; (Deadline 14 November)
South Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway; (Deadline 7 November)
Remuneration - These are not paid positions. However members are entitled to allowances for travelling and subsistence expenses incurred. They can also claim a flat rate allowance for any loss of earnings relating from the performance of their duties. The rates of these allowances are set in accordance with those payable to Justices of the Peace.
Time Commitment – 4 to 8 days a year
Successful candidates should have:
- effective interpersonal skills;
- effective interviewing skills;
- sound judgement, analytical skills and objectivity;
- good presentation and oral and written communication skills;
- the ability to articulate clear, well founded reasons on the suitability or otherwise of candidates; and
- the ability to work as a member of a team
Training will be provided to successful applicants.
